Pantone has ended our long awaited suffering and has announced the Pantone colour of the year 2020. It's blue! Hopefully not an indication of how the year 2020 is going to be...
The Classic Blue colour is a deep shade of blue and brings a certain level of comfort with it. This hue of indigo sparks many classic thoughts; the sky at dusk, serene waters, a blue jay bird, or a fresh bowl of blueberries. Announced 4 December, the Classic Blue colour is described by Pantone as "a reassuring presence instilling calm, confidence and connection".
The annual colour, which is announced each December, is chosen based on "what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time". The decision of following a rich cobalt blue is quite rich considering the history of the Color of the Year franchise, which began 20 years ago in 1999. In the year 1999, the color chosen was Cerulean, a serene shade that represented the excitement of a new millennium and offered a calming visual to the anxieties that preceded Y2K.
The Classic Blue definitely seems fitting for the time we are currently living in. The hue is not only seasonless, but genderless, making it accessible and desirable by all. The colour can easily be found in many parts of nature, from blueberries to eggplants, making it a colour that aligns with the green and sustainable movement for natural dyes.
